Biography

Sujata Chakraborty is a creative internationally recognized Bharatnatyam danseuse & cultural entrepreneur currently based in Denver, Colorado. Her Guru Smt. Usha Muralidharan was a student of late Smt. Kamala Johnpillai, one of the prominent & foremost students of Smt. Rukminidevi Arundale in Kalakshetra. Smt. Usha Muralidharan was trained extensively in Nattuvangam & choreography by her legendary uncle late Sri N. Veeramani Iyer of Jaffna. Sujata started her Bharatnatyam career under the guidance of Natyasree Smt. Anupa Guha Thakurta, a senior disciple of Padma Bhushan Guru Smt. Saroja Vaidyanathan. Sujata has her advanced training in abhinaya with Smt Nithyakalyani Vaidyanathan. She finished NavaRasa Sadhana training with Guru sri G Venu (2 levels) under the aegis of Kerala Sangeet Natak Academy. Sujata recently received an advanced level certification from Kalakshetra university , Chennai , India .

She is also fortunate enough to have training under the stalwarts of Bharatnatyam, Guru Smt. Saroja Vaidyanathan, Smt. Leela Samson, Smt Rama Vaidyanathan, Smt Savitha Sastry & Smt Indira Kadambi. Sujata performs extensively in India & abroad. Sujata was one of the eminent dancers in Savitha Shastry's hugely appreciated Dance productions in San Jose & Denver. Sujata is a recognized artist of Colorado Fine Arts Association. She was one of the lead artists' in the opening act of BangaMela ' 08, one of the biggest conference of Mid America Bengali Ascn. She also conceived & directed several highly acclaimed Dance productions in Atlanta & Denver metro area over the years. Sujata premiered her theme based solo Margam, DEVI MAHATYAM, in prestigious Kalanjali series of COLORADO FINE ARTS ASSOCIATION. Sujata believes in Universal unity & dance is her sole spiritual & social identity. She wants to spread the awareness towards global peace & unity with the power of her rich Bharatnatyam legacy .

February 2020 - Presented solo Margam ' Devi Mahatya ' in prestigious Kalanjali series hosted by Colorado Fine Arts Association in Broomfield, CO 

November 2019 - Presented group choreography in TAC Deepavali Utsav, Colorado 

Natyasamarpanam 2018 - Denver, Colorado

February 2018 - Performed solo in Uday Shankar Dance Festival Kolkata, India

August 2017 - full length Margam presentation with live orchestra 

March 2016 - Solo & group performance in CFAA Nrityanjali

June 2015 - performed as ensemble lead dancer in Savitha Sastry's mega Production Gods country in San jose California & Denver, CO

June 2013 - India Dance Festival, Colorado 

Oct 2012 - choreographed & performed huge group production CHIRANTANI during Durgapuja celebration in Denver
